Sit down comrades, let us discuss... democracy.
Why democracy - in theory because it empowers the people, motivates them to contribute actively and intelligently to the benefit of the State. No matter how capable the five people at the top are, the collective mass of humanity in the middle and bottom will always trump them from sheer volume and concentration. But it is not so. Firstly - it assumes an informed and rational population. This is the goal of education, and is mostly accomplished in developed nations. Don't try to apply in undeveloped nations, or you just end up with a coup de'etat replacing your elected leader with some tribal dictator who intends to govern for eternity. Secondly - Collective opinion is always the result of processes less intelligent than the mean intelligence of individuals. Simply put - the majority is stupider than the individual. Always. They are an inert mass, responding only to gross errors or miscalculations. Otherwise they prefer to live unfettered by such concerns. Some take conscientious interest, but the terrorism of majority opinion drowns out all variations, below or above the mean. Somebody said that at 11:30 PM - x - - x -
